My First Mother’s Day

Happy (belated) Mother’s Day to all of the mamas, step-mamas, foster mamas, fur baby mamas, plant mamas, mamas-to-be, mama-figures, and everyone else out there who shows motherly love to someone who needs it. You are superheroes.

I haven’t been a mom (yet), but I’ve got a little one on the way, so this was my first Mother’s Day to feel celebrated! It was so much fun to get little texts throughout the day from my family and friends.

I asked Nate if we could have homemade brunch as our Mother’s Day tradition.

Now, a few years ago, I would have laughed if someone told me that she gave her partner very specific requests on how to feel loved on Mother’s Day. But now, just like I wrote about in this 2 year anniversary blog post, I’m realizing that love is still love, even if it needs some clear directions. 😉

Rather than letting him flounder, wondering if I was expecting a gift, or flowers, or nothing at all (because sometimes I don’t want anything at all! For instance: we don’t celebrate Valentines Day. For some reason neither of us care about it at all), I told him exactly what would make me feel loved and appreciated on Mother’s Day :

  • I asked him if he could make me a homemade brunch. Nate is a fantastic cook (he’s the true foodie of the family!) and, more importantly, he really enjoys cooking. I cook out of necessity; he cooks out of love.
  • I asked him to plan the meal. Anything is fine by me, it doesn’t have to be fancy, I just don’t want to have to search for recipes or meal plan. (I hate meal planning!)

I slept in a little bit on Sunday morning and woke up to the sound of the KitchenAid whirling around. A few minutes later, I started to smell something delicious coming from the oven, so I popped out into the kitchen and found Nate making lobster and bacon frittatas and a gorgeous pineapple upside down coffee cake with cajata and maccaamia nuts. Swoooon.

I sat on the bar stool in my robe and drank a cup of coffee while I watched him cook. So spoiled! It was an absolutely perfect morning.

^ See the soccer game on in the background? It’s ALWAYS soccer, haha! If Nate’s not watching it, then he’s listening to a soccer podcast.

^ Cute little cat. She loves sitting on bags (cloth, paper) and boxes. I hate  clutter, but sometimes I’ll purposely leave a shopping bag on the floor so she can sit on it. Haha, weirdo.

^I had a special delivery from a new flower company in Austin! They’re called Friendly Flower ATX and they provide local and seasonal flower subscriptions. These flowers are hand-picked from nearby Texas farms and hand delivered (no delivery fee!) to your front door.

They’re super fresh, seasonal, and by buying them, you’re supporting local farmers!

And they smell SO good!! I took this picture on Sunday, but now it’s Tuesday and those beautiful lillies are opening up and showing off.

And I can’t sign off on this recap of my first Mother’s Day without recognizing my own mama! She’s my friend, my confidant, and my role model.

I’ve always had a close relationship with my mom, but I’ve felt this newfound closeness since I found out I was pregnant. I love being able to ask my mom for advice and hear the accounts of her four pregnancies and births.

She’s the absolute image of love and sacrifice and more LOVE. She just loves, loves loves..she’s like the Giving Tree. 🙂

So much love for you, mom!
