Top 12 Sushi Restaurants In Austin

Top 12 Sushi Restaurants in Austin

The sushi restaurants in Austin have been an unexpected delight to me in my years of exploring the Austin dining scene. In a very land-locked city with a relatively small population (compared to Houston and Dallas), Austin has an impressive number of exceptional sushi restaurants from top chefs who work daily to study and perfect the art of Japanese sushi.

Everyone knows the name “Uchi” in Austin (it’s the most famous Austin sushi restaurant), and while I absolutely adore Uchi and recommend it to many blog readers, there are a lot of other great ones worth exploring!

These Austin sushi restaurants are (roughly) listed north to south, but please use the map if you want to easily find the Austin sushi restaurant that’s nearest to you.

1. Soto

Top 12 Sushi Restaurants in Austin

Soto started up in Cedar Park, but there’s now a second location on South Lamar. Go here for a beautiful upscale dining experience, craft cocktails, and lots of creative spins on traditional Japanese cuisine. It’s fancy enough that you can dress up for a nice night out, yet casual enough that you could get away with jeans and a nice top for a weeknight dinner out. Photo: Soto Austin

2. Fukumoto

Fukumoto Izakaya

As an izakaya, Fukumoto provides a fun and casual Austin sushi dining experience  on E 6th St. Sure, you can enjoy beautifully prepared nigiri and sashimi (the menu is always changing with the freshest fish being flown in from Japan’s Tsukiji market), but this is always a great place for Japanese skewers, beer, and craft cocktails. 3. Uchiko

Best sushi restaurants in Austin

Uchiko is considered the slightly more casual sister to Hai Hospitality’s Uchi on South Lamar. You’ll still get the same exceptional service, expertly-crafted food and drinks, and authentic sushi experience. (Psst: just like with Uchi, a great way to enjoy Uchiko at a fraction of the cost is by going during the Sake Social from 4-6:30 pm.) Photo: Uchiko Facebook

4. Komé

Komé was created to bring a homestyle, comforting environment to the Austin sushi scene. It’s a cozy restaurant with approachable prices (especially if you go during lunch), a vast menu, and a welcoming staff.

5. Tadashi

Tadashi Sushi Austin

If you’re looking for upscale sushi restaurants in far west Austin, Tadashi is located at the Hill Country Galleria. The bento boxes and lunch specials are a less expensive way to enjoy the food, but Tadashi is also a perfect place to enjoy dinner. Photos: Tadashi

6. Uroko

Uroko Austin

This is a really fun concept from the team behind Komé! First, they offer both group and private sushi classes so you can really learn to appreciate the skills it takes to make excellent sushi. They also offer an omakase menu, as well as a larger-than-usual selection of tamaki (hand rolls) with flavors like like bbq eel, raw beef tenderloin, and Japanese pickles. Right now there’s even a DIY Temaki kit that you can purchase and make at home! Photo: Uroko

7. Musashino

Best sushi restaurants in Austin

Musashino is one of THE premier sushi destinations in Austin. It’s where Tyson Cole (Uchi,) Takehiro Asazu (Komé), and Kazu Fukumoto (Fukumoto) all trained…so it’s a must-visit for any Austin sushi lover! The freshest fish is flown in daily from all over the world for an innovative and constantly evolving menu. Photo: Musashino

8. TenTen

Best sushi in Austin

This downtown restaurant is relatively new restaurant in the Austin sushi scene. While it’s not quite at the same level as Musashino or Uchi, it’s a nice and trendy place to enjoy hot and cold starters, craft cocktails, sashimi, and grilled plates in a downtown Austin date night setting.

This is a hip, colorful spot to stop for lunch or happy hour while shopping on South Congress. They serve Tokyo-style street food, so lots of hot and cold apps, big bowls of ramen, and plenty of nigiri, sashimi, and maki rolls.

10. Otoko

Uroko Austin Sushi

You have to get tickets (rather than reservations) to visit this trendy omakase experience in South Austin. It’s a tiny 12-seat Japanese restaurant that offers a unique tasting menu that is truly the most unique sushi restaurant in Austin. Photo: Otoko

11. Uchi

upscale restaurants in Austin: Uchi

When you ask someone to list Austin sushi restaurants, Uchi is the most common household name in Austin. It comes from the Japanese word for “house” because it’s in a renovated south Austin bungalow. Tyson Cole, the chef and owner, is one of the few Austin chefs to have won a James Beard Award (Best Chef: Southwest). Uchi will completely amaze you every time you visit.

12. Neighborhood Sushi

best sushi in Austin

While it has a casual name, Neighborhood Sushi is definitely an upscale dining restaurant on South Congress. They have an excellent selection of raw and grilled dishes, unique offerings (the egg custard was so much fun), and a large sake selection. The staff is so friendly and knowledgable and really make sure that you have a perfect dining experience.

This is so helpful! It’s hard to know how fancy (or informal) different restaurants are based on websites or Yelp reviews. Thank you!
