Let’s keep things simple in 2018, shall we? Getting fit doesn’t have to be a stressful, all-consuming task, despite how much mental effort we seem to give it…
I’m 27, so by now I’ve had my fair share of athletic ups-and-downs. I remember the year in college when I was 30 pounds overweight and how miserable I felt squeezing into a pair of skinny jeans. And I remember back when I was a teenager and I was swimming 9X/week, and no matter how many calories I ate, I just couldn’t get full. I’ve been a swimmer, a runner, a yogi, and now a #barrecodebabe.
I’m sharing all this because I’m in my late twenties, and by now I’ve tried enough things to know what works for me and what doesn’t. And I need to simplify things and just listen to my body and give it what it needs. Getting fit doesn’t have to be confusing. We just need to be vocal about sharing our goals with people we trust and then doing those goals.
USE THESE 2 EASY STEPS TO SET YOUR OWN FITNESS GOALS FOR 2018
These are the two steps I used to set my fitness goals for 2018. I feel super confident about what I’m working on this year, and I hope this gives you some guidance as well!
1. What makes you feel great?
Think of the times in your life when you felt great in your skin! What workout were you doing at the time? Yoga? Crossfit? After-dinner walks through your neighborhood? Concentrate on what makes you feel good, and set a goal for 2018 related to that workout.
2. Who can you tell?
Studies tell as that sharing your goals can make you 95% more likely to do them. Think of someone who will believe in you and hold you accountable. Moms, BFFs, significant others, and coaches are all possible choices. I know that I could share my fitness goals with any one of my instructors at The Barre Code, and she would believe in me and (more importantly) push me to accomplish them.
MY 2018 FITNESS GOALS
Alright friends, these are my 2018 fitness goals. I’m not interested in pressuring or shaming anyone here. Your goals may be incredibly different from mine (trying to run 10 marathons this year? Go for it!! doing your first 5k in years? Me too!). We’re all so different, and that’s a beautiful thing!
My goals are meant to inspire, uplift, and hopefully help you make your own goals for fitness that will help you find long-lasting energy and positivity in your day.
1. I’m going to The Barre Code 3-4 times a week, and one of those will be a cardio class. I’ve found so much confidence through barre; I’ve discovered my abs for the first time in my life, my body weight is right where I want it, and I’ve fallen in love with early morning workouts. This year, I’m going to be better about doing those TBC or HIIT classes at The Barre Code (yep – turns out that barre is actually good for cardio, too).
Want to try some barre classes The Barre Code Austin? Use the code “somuchbarre” at checkout to try your first 2 weeks for just $40 (normally $80). This is such a steal, and the perfect way to experience barre for the first time; you’ll really start to see results after a couple weeks of consistency.
2. Yoga will be making an appearance back in my life in 2018. I bought a pack of classes to Yoga Yoga, my favorite studio here in Austin. My friend and I are going to be accountability partners and go to yoga together 1X/week for a Vinyasa class.
I do yoga mostly for my mind. I know it does wonders for the body, but I notice immediate results in my mental state when I’m doing yoga. Mental health is just as important as physical health (maybe more important? what do you think?), so the splurge to buy yoga classes (and get another pair of my favorite yoga pants – duh!) is well worth it.
3. I’m *gasp* running again! I asked for new running shorts for Christmas because we all know the power of new workout gear. (Psst: got this pair of shorts, and I’m in love with the hi-rise cut! They’re super flattering and comfortable.)
I also signed Nate and myself up for a 5k next month. I ran a marathon back in 2014, and I’ve done exactly ZERO races since then. I’m starting small and working my way up to a half marathon at the end of 2018.
I’d love to hear your personal fitness goals! Care to share them with me in the comments section? Or, if you have your own blog, post a link to your goals so I can go read them!
Here’s to making 2018 our fittest year yet, friends.

Thanks for sharing your fitness goals! I am sitting down today and tomorrow to think through the specifics of my fitness goals, but I know I definitely want to go to spin class 3x/week and get back into yoga myself. I’m thinking of getting back into yoga with the Yoga with Adriene TRUE 30-Day Challenge in January. Maybe I’ll look into Yoga Yoga myself! I just have to be careful with pregnancy modifications and such, but I love the mental and physical benefits of yoga and want to bring it back into my life.
I don’t know about that 30-day challenge! You need to tell me about it next time I see you!
I’m aiming to run more this year, for sure, and I’d really like to get back into yoga. It does wonders for my mental state too and I just love the way it makes my body feel. My problem is finding a studio and an instructor I like as my previous instructor moved on to other endeavors a few years ago and I’ve been lost ever since. I think I just need to take advantage of introductory offers and try a few classes at different studios until I find one that fits.
I hear ya.. Have you tried class pass yet? That’s what I used when I was trying to figure out which barre studio I’d like to use. I was able to try every barre studio in Austin!
