marathon training week 12
This training process is flying by! I can’t believe the race is so close. I had a 16 mile jog last weekend.
I love doing my training in Austin, which Forbes listed as the 7th best city in the country for runners! (Chicago, NYC, Portland, Boulder, San Francisco, and DC were 1-6). My route for long runs is to do the 10 mile loop at Town Lake, stop at the car to refuel, then do an out-and-back for the last 5-6 miles.
The sun rises around 7:00, so I try to start at about 6:30 before the trail gets too crazy. Although I love using gu’s and gels as fuel, since they’re packaged nicely and easy to use, I’ve been consuming bananas and dates as my carb source during the long runs. Gels are about $1.25 per 100 calorie packet, and bananas are only $0.25 for 100 calories of easily digested energy!
If I run over 15 miles, I chug some coconut water during and after the run. Gatorade could work, but after a stomach incident when I was 13-years-old and swimming a 200 IM, Gatorade makes me a little nauseous. I do need something to replace the lost electrolytes and keep myself hydrated! Can you see the layer of salt on my forehead?
After a run I walk, stretch, ice, shower, and the REST! I try to run on Sundays, because that’s the day I take some time away from my violin.
And when it’s 80 degrees in January, guess where you’ll find me taking an afternoon nap?
Poolside:)

AGH- jealous about the poolside rest! It's far too cold where I live to do much running outside at all right now.
I agree with Forbes – and I'm not even a runner!
So impressed with your training, Kels! I'm sure you appreciate the Austin weather WAY more after having those cold Chicago winters!
