But we managed to have a wonderful evening, even though she had just gotten off a 24-hour train ride!
Friday Night Music Night is a tradition that my friend and her sister started, and I’ve jumped on the bandwagon. It’s pretty simple: you listen to music and drink wine on a Friday night! There are only two rules:
Your wine glass can never be empty
You have to turn on some music, but nothing else (like tv, movies, etc)
Last night we went to Whole Foods and picked out some fun stuff to nibble on for dinner. And when I say nibble, I actually mean devour.
The wine was a Charles Smith Merlot. Sister #1 told me that it’s supposed to be amazing for the price, so we gave it a shot. I loved it!
Accompanying the wine was a whole wheat baguette and 3 types of cheese.
The top picture, the blue cheese, was our favorite. We’re blue cheese girls! It was sooo salty that I woke up parched in the middle of the night, but it was worth it. The sheep’s milk cheese in the middle was supposed to have a mild smokey flavor, with mushroom overtones. I didn’t taste the smoke or the ‘shrooms too much….that might have been because I insisted on whole wheat bread instead of white, which was a bit of an overkill the the poor, humble cheese:( The third was a soft, rich cheese called L’edel de Cleron, and it’s named after the village it’s made in. I loved the soft texture (my favorite!) and the flavor was mild but very very tasty:)
Fresh, organic peaches on the side! Yummmm
Tonight’s music varied. We started with a little bit of Andrew Bird, then Courtney introduced me to Doug Burr, who is a local musician in her grad school town of Denton, TX. I’m a fan! His song “Black Wave” is so beautiful I want to cry when I hear it….not even kidding.
She also introduced me to The Mountain Goats. If you want to hear the most hysterical, depressing song ever, click right hereeeeee. Apparently they have an entire album about a miserable couple who wants to divorce. Y’know, everyone needs an uplifting song every now and then;)
The night concluded with deep conversation and lots of The Decemberists playing in the background. I love FNMN!!
Unfortunately, I never sleep well after drinking wine (especially red!!?) so I woke up at 3:30 a.m. and couldn’t fall asleep. I finally got out of bed at 5:00 and went on a 6 mile run. It was breezy and cool and wonderful!
Pink overkill much?
My favorite part of the run is going over the train tracks on the bridge. Since I live in a suburb right now, it makes me feel like I’m in a big city for the 45 seconds it takes to cross the bridge. And I stopped to take a pic, because I’m cool like that.
You are TOTALLY cool like that! I love everything about this blog post. Except that Kylee and I were not there with y'all. Can't even wait for August! Can we do friday night movie night?
