Tiny Office Reveal

Tiny Office Reveal

Hello! Happy Memorial Day! I’ve finished my tiny office, and it was so much fun to design and decorate and make into my own little space. If you’re looking for small office inspiration, I hope this helps you think of ideas to make your own little work space a fun, invigorating, motivating place for you to spend your time. Here’s my tiny office reveal!

My sister in Dallas heard I was creating an office space in my master closet, and she said, “I feel like you’ve been training for this your entire life.” Ha! So true. I grew up in a big family with a bunch of brothers and sisters, so privacy was hard to come by. All of us learned to take little corners of the house and make them our own. For instance, in my childhood home, my parents busted out some drywall in the under-the-stairs closet, had an electric outlet installed, and turned it into a mini bedroom that was used when we came home to visit from college. It was the most coveted space in the house because, unlike the couch, it was a quiet place to escape. Ha! Sounds so crazy now, but if you come from a big family then I know you can relate.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, Nate and I have both been working at home. We typically use the guest room as an office space, and the master bedroom as the other office space. But since Nate’s accident, we’ve been fortunate to have some family living with us to help out with both Nate’s medical needs and Milo. (That baby boy is getting BUSY!) So the guest room is now being used for guests, which means we had to come up with another office space….and I decided that the master closet would be perfect for this.

Our closet is definitely not designed specifically to be an office space. It’s a walk-in closet, but it’s not huge like the big room-sized ones that you see in the California Closets catalogues. But it’s a pretty decent size, and I took some measurements and realized that if I moved all the clothes to one side, I could fit a small desk on the other side.

We had an electrician install an outlet plug, ordered a small desk, and then I spent a few days curating it to make it into a space that I’ll really enjoy. There aren’t any windows in the closet, so instead of relying on natural light, I decided to make it a cozy space with lamps and candles and lots of pink and gold textiles.

Finding a desk was the hardest thing! I wish I could link the one I got, but it’s sold out now. 🙁 (But if you’re on the hunt for a small desk, it looks like this one is still in stock and it’s pretty cute and cheap!) I wanted to find one no more than 20 inches deep and able to deliver to my home, and it was actually really hard to find something that I liked that was also in stock and able to deliver before, like, August.

Lots of the odds and ends are from Target, because they have a really easy online order/pick up at store system! I got a cute pink and gold lamp, this artificial banana tree plant and this fake grass (no sunlight in here, so I’m going with fake plants!), and a few new calendars and pens and organizational materials to feel revived. Because nothing feels like hitting “restart” like a new package of colorful pens, y’all! My friend Jubilee (remember when I went to her wedding in Philly last summer when I was pregnant?) sent me a box of some gorgeous Voluspa candles as a “thinking of you” gift, and the pink Panjore Lychee candle matches perfectly with my little pink lamp and it makes me soooo happy! My mother-in-law also gifted me a few, and my sisters mailed one to me, so I’m all stocked up on beautiful little candles to light. (I meant, the shelves next to the desk had been holding my shoes for the past 3 years, so I need a few candles to make the space smell nice, haha.)

There you have it! It’s nothing incredibly fancy, but it’s my own little space where I can hunker down in the morning with a cup of coffee and enjoy a few hours at my computer. I filled the walls and the shelves with all of my favorite things, so it’s just a really aligning space for me to be in to start my day. I’m so happy with how it turned out, and I’m loving having a permanent space to get work done, rather than bouncing around from the dining room table to the couch to the bed.

If you’re looking to see a bit more of my house, you can look at this blog post. Some parts of the house have changed since then (for instance, my old studio is now Milo’s nursery), but it’s mostly the same!

So cute! Turned out great! I like the addition of the plants.

One thing I learned when updating my office space was that if I swapped my yellow-ish lightbulbs in the ceiling and desk lamps for ‘daylight’ it really helped with the no-windows feeling and the light was more comfortable to work in.
