Last year around this time, I posted (and raved!) about a new brunch at Guild seafood restaurant. That restaurant closed (a sad but very common thing in the Austin restaurant scene) in the spring, and they decided to open as a new concept this summer: Rosedale Kitchen and Bar (RKB).

I was bummed that Guild closed, because the food was fantastic and the ambiance was absolutely gorgeous. But I checked out the new brunch offerings at RKB, and I have to tell you that I’m equally excited about this delicious new meal in Austin!

See my guide to the 24 best Austin brunches here!

The concept at RKB is a little harder to pin down than it was at Guild, but the quality of food is just as high. I think they’re going for a more approachable, neighborhood kitchen and bar (no “seafood” theme here like there was at Guild). The general ambiance of the restaurant is mostly unchanged from what it was at Guild, with the exception of a few new textiles and updated pieces of furniture.

Caitlin and I shared a meal there, and we started with some coffee (me) and cocktails (her) and pastries. The cinnamon roll is served soft and warm and covered in a thick layer of cream cheese frosting…YUM! I loved this pastry (and y’all know how passionate I am about cinnamon rolls.) The homer donut was a bit dry tasting… I was dining during the second weekend of their brunch service, so I’m sure they were still working out kinks. Based on how good the cinnamon roll was, I know they’ll up their game in the donut department. 😉

^ The braised beef cheek with creamy grits, pickled red onion, cilantro, poached eggs was exceptional. Perfectly soft and tender beef cheek, rich and salty grits, and two beautifully poached eggs. This entree is $16 (a pretty average price point at RKB) and appropriately priced.

^ HOLD YOUR HORSES… The Crab Cake Benedict (also $16) was phenomenal!! That lump crab on a toasty English muffin, covered in hollandaise (mmmm…my favorite!) was the perfect savory brunch treat.

^ I always have to let my inner food blogger shine and order the brightest, most obnoxious dish on the menu…and it was the Fruity Pebble Toast ($13) in this case. I mean…how fun is that photo? The toast isn’t overly sweet until you add the whipped cream, and then it’s probably a nice sugary starter to share with the table. I liked it for the fun, bright colors, but next time I’ll try the Loaded Tater Tots for a savory starter. They seem like they would be the perfect hangover helper…not that I need that at 37 weeks pregnant. But someday, maybe.. 😉
