Monday Chat: Update On My 2019 Monthly Goals

At the beginning of 2019, I posted 12 little monthly goals that I’d try to keep up with.

We’re now halfway into the April (nearly 1/3 of the way through the year…what?) and I’m still plugging away on those little goals! They’ve been fun.

I haven’t posted an update on them, so today I’m going to fill you in on how they’ve been going, month-by-month:

JANUARY // Meditate Every Day

I chose this as one of my 2018 goals too, and I loved it so much I repeated it in 2019.

So….I kind of knew I would love this one.

Isn’t it funny how we know the things that are good for us and make us happy, but we still don’t do them? It’s weird.

I love meditating. I love how it calms my mind and sets my day up for success. I love the positive life changes I’ve manifested from tapping into my inner self (soul, inner being, God….lots of names for this) and getting my mind to shut up.

And in January, I meditated every single day! But since then, I haven’t done it daily. I still do it occasionally. I guess it’s a good thing I added it as a monthly goal TWICE for my 2019 goals!

Will I be repeating this goal? A big, fat, HELL YES!

February // cook out of one cookbook

Monthly Goals

Ok, probably one of the funnest goals I’ve done in a while! I’ll definitely be doing this one again!

I chose Yotam Ottolenghi’s beautiful plant-based cookbook, Plenty, for the month of cooking.

I’ve flipped through the book many times, but I don’t often create vegetarian meals because neither Nate nor I are vegetarian, and it feels like a lot of work to gather new ingredients I’m not accustomed to using. Plus, I often find that I need to make 2 dishes for a vegetarian meal, rather than one easy dish if it’s meat-based.

But I am so happy to have cooked out of this book for the month! I cook about twice a week at home, so I made something around 10 recipes. Here are a few pictures of the things I made:

Will I be repeating this goal? Definitely! I’m excited to try it again with another cookbook!

March // Wish happiness on 3 people a day

I read about this in this Tim Ferris book. The idea is to silently spend 60 seconds wishing happiness on someone: a relative, friend, or total stranger. Do this for 3 different people a day.

(If you were ever in the barre studio with me, in the same grocery store, or just randomly passed me on the street, you might have been someone I wished happiness upon. Haha!)

Ok, here are my thoughts about this goal:

  • I wasn’t 100% perfect at it. I probably did it 50-60% of the days in the month.
  • I love little goals that help me with mindfulness. I especially love them when they take little effort, yet make a big impact. This one, though, didn’t make a huge impact in my life. (Maybe it made an impact on the people I was thinking of? I have no way of knowing.)
  • I already feel like I have a bunch of things I’m trying to remember to do throughout the day, so I didn’t want to add extra alarm reminders for this.

Will I repeat this goal? No. I didn’t notice a big enough change in my happiness to make it worth it. The only way I would repeat this goal would be if I made it something I had to do immediately upon waking up. But right now, I already have so many amazing options fighting for the first 60 minutes of my day (journaling, barre, meditation, coffee), that I don’t feel the need to add another.

April // Be your unapologetically weird self

We’re halfway through April, and here’s what this goal has meant to me:

I’ve been reading TONS of books. I’ve been enjoying quiet afternoon walks. I’ve been posting to social media less (3-4 times a week instead of 5-6) and not giving myself any guilt about it.

“Unapologetically weird” does NOT mean getting pierced and tattooed and strutting down SoCo in a thong (although it could mean that!)

It means being the truest, rawest, realest form of yourself, even if it’s not what “sells” on social media very well. Even if it means that your unapologetically weird self seems really boring to other people.

But it will probably make you really happy, and that’s what counts.

And, I mean, April has been a pretty happy month for me so far. 🙂

Ok, that’s my update! Have you been doing any yearly or monthly goals? How are they going?

What keeps you motivated in accomplishing your goals?

XO
