Happy Halloween!

Now, if I had truly tried to keep with the theme of today’s holiday, I’d be sharing true crime and thriller novels today. But I honestly don’t read many of those anymore! I went through a phase last year when I read a bunch of thriller books like Gone Girl and The Girl On The Train, but they lost their appeal after I read 5 or 6 of them and realized they’re all mostly the same.

Ha! So…Happy Halloween? Sorry, I’m not being a very festive blogger today. But I do have 3 books to share with you!

1. Dr. Death

My first one isn’t a book. Instead of listening to an audiobook this month, I binge-listened to the entire first season of the Dr. Death podcast. It tells the story of Christopher Duntsch, the Dallas neurosurgeon who was recently sentenced to life in prison for medical malpractice. His horrible practice resulted in maiming and even killing many of his patients…and this podcast recaps the entire story.

It’s riveting. I could not stop until I got to the end! I began the mini series on the flight to London, and I listened to the entire thing as fast as I could.

2. Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone

Alrighty, y’all. Here’s something fun! I discovered this awesome young adult series called Harry Potter. I don’t know…seems pretty good so far? You heard it here first: Harry Potter is gonna be a big thing.

Ok, but actually…

I’m one of the few people left on this planet who hasn’t read the Harry Potter series, and I decided that the upcoming holiday season is a good time to binge read! I read The Sorcerer’s Stone last month, and I’m going to keep working my way through all 7 books.

Only 20 years behind, no big deal… 😉

3. Some Kind of Wonderful

I needed something to read on the flight home from London, and, craving something light and chick-lit-y, I quickly picked this one up at an airport bookstore boarding the plane.

Here’s the story line: Lizzy has been dating Ian for 10 years. She’s expecting a romantic proposal during their getaway to Dubai, but instead is surprised when he suddenly breaks up with her and declares that it’s time to go separate ways. Her journey of re-discovering herself, learning how to date again, and pursuing a new career begins.

Honestly…I wasn’t super jazzed by this book. I thought it would be a fun one to purchase and then pass off to one of my sisters to read, but I just don’t think it’s worth the recommendation! Oh well…it helped me kill 3 hours of time on the flight.

4. Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns

Does anyone else LOVE The Devil Wears Prada movie with Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway? It’s one of my favorites! I read the book last year, and it was a fun vacation read.

I decided to finish the trilogy and read the second book in the series, Revenge Wears Prada. This book picks up 8 years after The Devil Wears Prada. Andy Sachs, the intern who suffered under the intolerable Miranda Priestly, is now engaged to an attractive and wealthy media mogul, running a high-end bridal magazine, and living in New York City. But on the morning of her wedding, she discovers a letter that changes everything, and the path she thought she was walking down takes a sharp turn.

Now, I’m certainly no literary prowess. I’m a casual blog writer, a recreational reader, and I’m not claiming to write any life-altering book reviews. BUT…I know what I like when it comes to reading.

A good book manages to me for a ride. My favorite books will twist and turn my emotions, take them up, up, up…and then suddenly catapult them into outer space. Or drop them. Or spin them around 180 degrees. I don’t know…I just want a book to make me feel something.

Revenge Wears Prada was a little bit like an airplane that just couldn’t quite get off the runway. This book would zoom off and lift 2 inches off the ground only to come bouncing back to earth. There were about 50 little stories that could have taken my emotions on a ride, but they all ended before they began.

Am I going to read the third book in this series, When Life Gives You Lululemons? You betcha. Because I’m a classic type-A overachiever who can’t stand to not finish a book series. #sohealthy.
